My first time with CCs for this variety. Quite a variation in type, some of the more traditional look with chests rather deeper than ideal for today’s Standard; others with a bit more leg but in some cases needing a bit more width through the front, so it wasn’t easy to be consistent type-wise. It would be foolish to pretend the battle for steadier temperament has yet been won; two males did not want to be handled & were withdrawn, & several others had a distinctly wary look. Bitches were generally better. Looking at the catalogue, the transatlantic influence has certainly been a help in this respect.

MPD (2) Difficult decision between completely contrasting pups. 1 BP, Armstrong’s Lauralee Saddlers Wells, elegant red, quality head, clean neck & shoulders, enough forechest, well ribbed, showed & moved happily. Real baby, needs to settle behind so his hindquarters balance the rest of him; 2 Gatheral-Graham’s Phaeland Star Double, neater more compact b/t, masculine head, OK front angles, correct topline, preferred his hindquarters at this stage. Needs more confidence, otherwise might have turned the tables. PD (2) 1 L Saddlers Wells; 2 Linacre’s Rosenket Rigoletto, good size b/t, quality head, correct shoulder blades, unexaggerated, enough substance. Moved slightly close behind, preferred front & forereach of 1. JD (2) Two interesting reds of similar types, very obviously brothers. 1 Coxon’s Bensarka Incognito, catches the eye with his impressive head carriage though would prefer a shade more oblique shoulder blade. Plenty of forechest, good length of ribbing, excellent hindquarters & rear movement, Could have a shade more reach in front; 2 MacDonald’s Bensarka Cosmopolitan, similar all through, good reach of neck & upper arm, slightly steep in shoulders, good body shape. Preferred hindquarters & tail carriage of 1. YD (2) 1 Cooper’s Kochana’s Celebration of Hacienda at Sontag, lovely quality b/t, super size & balance, everything fits & the angles match, enough neck, shapely body without being excessively low, enough bone, moved soundly, perhaps the best hindquarters of the day. Thought he would take the RCC but in the challenge he just didn’t show the length of stride I’m sure he is capable of – perhaps he prefers grass. Guess he could well make a useful sire; 2 w/d. PGD (4) 1 Seago & Gibbard’s Amlida Dramatiker, nice all-round shaded r, grew on me in the challenge where his steady ground-covering movement took him to the RCC. Masculine boy, handsome head, OK shoulders, enough forechest, slightly too deep in chest. Well made unexaggerated hindquarters, kept his shape beautifully going round; 2 Ellis’ Tealby Red Between The Lines, classy red, close up to 1, has quality throughout, good shoulders & upper arm, correct topline, proud head carriage. Just preferred 1’s hindquarters; 3 Trafford’s Dabrenhof Nadal. LD (1) 1 Norton’s Matzell Man Of The Moment, stylish red, good neck & forechest, carries head well, neat elbows, feet could be a shade bunchier. Well ribbed, moved well in profile, slightly narrow behind. OD (5) 1 CC & BOB, MacDonald’s Ch Bensarka Phoenix Sun, beautiful red, just the type I was hoping to see, superb quality without any exaggeration, smooth in every sense of the word, clearly enjoying himself & it made my day to see him striding round, keeping his shape & with a happily wagging tail, should be a tremendous asset to the breed; 2 K Celebration of H at S; 3 Gatheral-Graham’s Phaeland Screw Driver.

MPB (3) 1 Gatheral-Graham’s Phaeland Shy N Demanding, b/t, not the name I’d have chosen, thankfully she isn’t shy though she needs to learn to move in a straight line, good basic shape, well boned, soundly made, compact. Hard decision with the very different male for BP, just felt the overall picture would have been helped by a little less weight; 2 Armstrong’s Lauralee Lush Lashes, finer type pretty elegant red, good head, front & forechest. Preferred 1’s hindquarters; 3 Lewis & Eddies’ Rijobeau Peach Melba. PB (1) 1 Holburn’s Phaeland Skye Dancer, quality feminine b/t, correct shoulders & ribbing, OK bone, slightly round in eye. Would prefer neater hindquarters. JB (2) 1 RCC, Hunt’s Carpaccio Cognac Diamond, gorgeous choc, quality all through, loved her expression, great reach of neck, excellent angles, enough leg to balance her length, so close in the challenge, excels in reach & drive. Just needs a little more width in front which the coming months will surely bring, great future assured; 2 MacDonald’s Bensarka Cheeky Vimto, neater type feminine red, charming type with a happy attitude, sensible forechest, sound mover. Not quite ribbing or the exceptional side gait of 1 but liked her a lot. YB (2) 1 C Cognac Diamond; 2 Kerry’s Ralines Pretty Woman at Kireton, very nice choc, good type & outline, neat hindquarters, well ribbed & balanced. Just preferred front angles & forereach of 1. PGB (3) 1 McNaughton’s Cedavoch Eindackel Lucretia Black, lovely compact b/t, fits together very well, the right angulation, correct topline, super hindquarters. Head could be a shade more feminine; 2 Higgins’ Leveliss Drink Down The Moon, more refined type, such a pretty elegant red, OK front, the right forechest, smooth topline. 1 scored in hindquarters; 3 Holburn’s Phaeland Strathisla Dawn. LB (3) Very much liked all three. 1 Dalgety’s Thundergay Blue Bayou, b/t, super example of the traditional Smooth, lower to ground than some & perhaps a shade too deep in chest but of her type very hard to fault, excellent front, flows head to tail, enough but not exaggerated substance, super ribbing, sound, looks good going round; 2 Norton’s Matzell Maid In Time, more elegant type red, feminine head, reachy neck, good topline retained on the move, excellent side gait. A shade narrow in front, didn’t stand quite so true as 1 but made a delightful picture in profile; 3 Seago & Gibbard’s Amlida Evora. OB (10) Quality & quantity. 1 CC, Henningsen’s Ch Bensarka Sunkissed Sky, beautiful litter sister to DCC, a real pigeon pair, similar in every way including that delightful character & total lack of exaggeration. Dog had a shade more rear drive; 2 Norton’s Ch Matzell Mildred, super elegant red, so feminine, beautiful type, clean lines, well ribbed, true front. Have admired her previously but wasn’t using her hindquarters so well on the move this time; 3 Dalgety’s Thundergay Delta Dawn.
