I’ve not judged Mini Wires since 2008, so it was a real privilege to have this opportunity at the prestigious WHD Club show. The small number of truly excellent dogs stand apart from the vast majority where quality and type is highly variable. Upright shoulders, short upper arms, protruding elbows and flat, terrier fronts were commonplace. Hindquarters that appeared well-angulated when stacked, all too often straightened-up on the move and resulted in rising or stepped top-lines in profile.

I hope it was obvious to the ringside that I was looking for bold, outgoing Dachshunds who were in good, hard condition and who could move freely.

I made a note that 13 of the 59 dogs present were nervous to some extent (and that excludes the dogs with clever handlers who were largely able to mask it). One exhibitor even said to me “I’m sorry he’s nervous”, as she put the dog on the table. I’m afraid there were dogs who were perhaps better constructed than some of my winners, but whose temperament was unacceptable to me in comparison with the Breed Standard.

I was concerned that, in addition to those that look more like terriers, there were some that appeared rather toy-ish with round eyes and pitter-patter movement, lacking drive and extension at both ends.

There are enough dogs and bitches with good construction, movement and temperament for this breed to be able to make progress overall and I am grateful to my winners for bringing their lovely hounds and making my day so enjoyable.

Veteran Dog or Bitch (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Hayward’s Ch Foxearth Foto Copy. 9 year old harsh-coated red bitch presented in lovely hard. condition She could clearly still do a day’s work and has a fabulous extrovert temperament. She had a neat front, with good length of upper arm and tight-fitting elbows. Elegant neck. Good amount of forechest running into a tidy sweeping underline. Moved a touch close behind when going away, but parallel nonetheless.

2nd: Oram’s Janjac Moschino at Rosswell. Another 9 year old. Well-balanced brindle bitch, but not as harsh in coat as 1. Shorter in the upper arm and more upright in shoulder than 1. Good ground clearance. Moved parallel going away and had slightly better width in front coming towards me than my winner.

Good Citizen Dog Scheme Dog or Bitch (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Baxter’s Hotwire Didja Ever. Correct sized light brindle dog who had a bit more ground clearance than is required. Could do with more length of upper arm and more angulation at both ends. Presented in good, hard condition. Moved parallel going away, but slightly more crooked than I prefer, coming towards me. Good luck with your Silver GCDS Award.

Minor Puppy Dog (4 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Dunn’s Barratini Danz On to Ashridge. Correctly proportioned brindle dog of just 7 months. Good reach of neck. Would have preferred a bit more length of keel and ribbing. Held a firm topline in profile movement. Well-angulated behind and he moved parallel in both directions.

2nd: Howells’ Fallowmill Sergio. Although this dog exceeded the desired maximum weight, his temperament and other qualities outweighed those of the 3rd placed dog. Correct length-height proportions, but I would have preferred more ground clearance. He had good length of ribbing and a tidy, flowing underline. Good coat. Slightly wider behind when moving away than 1

3rd: HOOPER Drakesleat Mad About T’Buoy

Puppy Dog (5 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Boyns’ Brindeckel Diamond Geezer. A really extrovert 10 month old, harsh-coated brindle. Good amount of forechest with clearly evident dimples (in contrast with most others). Balanced and with good ground clearance. Elegant neck, but slightly upright in shoulder. Well ribbed up, with a tidy, flowing underline. Moved parallel in both directions. Best Dog Puppy.

2nd: Thorn-Andrews’ Drakesleat Fifty Scents. Slightly longer type than 1, not as extrovert and coat not as harsh. Good, elegant neck running into well-placed shoulders. Super, tight-fitting elbows. Prominent forechest. Good top-line, held at all times. Well-angulated behind and he used this to drive well moving away.

3rd: Steward’s Bassodon Dolce

Junior Dog (4 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: Whitehouse’s Alshtadt Kinder Surpriz (Imp Rus). Overall, an elegant little dog who presents a lovely picture in profile. Short in upper arm which resulted in his elbows being out when moving towards me. Preferred his amount of forechest to 2. Good length of ribbing. Reasonable hind angulation. Another happy, outgoing dog.

2nd: Gosney’s Stargang Hugo’s Quest. Another well-proportioned dog with an excellent coat and really well presented.. Better length of upper arm and more layback of shoulder than 1. Good length of ribbing, but a bit more tucked up in underline. Moved closer behind going away. I wondered why the handler felt the need to hold his jaw in such a vice-like grip to keep him steady on the table.

Yearling Dog (1 Entries) Abs: 1

Post Graduate Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 11st: Baxter’s Hotwire Didja Ever. GCDS winner.

2nd: Adams’ Angleholm’s Figaro. Harsh-coated brindle with better front construction than 1 and prominent forechest. If he had more length of upper arm his front movement would be less crooked when coming towards the judge. Not as confident on the table. Good amount of ground clearance. Good length of ribbing, so lacking in many others. Very neat underline. Would also prefer more angulation behind.

Limit Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Thorn-Andrews’ Drakesleat Neils on Wheels. Handsome brindle dog who excels in front construction, as do all his kennel-mates. Good head, elegant neck, flowing into correct topline. Very good length of ribbing with lovely sweeping underline and good top-line which he held at all times. Well-angulated behind which he used to good effect on the move, both in profile and absolutely parallel moving away.

2nd: Kugow & Holt’s Waldmeister Samuel JW. Taller type than 1 and very slightly over the desired maximum weight. However, I couldn’t fault his temperament and he has an excellent coat. Good head and elegant reach of neck. Ribbing extends well back. He is well-angulated behind, but is lacking in upper arm and was slightly out at elbow.

3rd: ADAMS Angleholm’s Figaro

Open Dog (6 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Phillips’ Curtisey Boogy Woogy JW. A really good, honest little brindle dog who just gets on with it! Definitely one to admire on the move where he holds a good profile and drives front and rear. Good, houndy head proudly held on his reachy neck. Well constructed front with good layback of shoulder and length of upper arm. He has adequate length of ribbing and a tidy underline. I was pleased to be able to award this dog his third CC today.

2nd: Dance’s Ch Deepdax Overdraft Too Far Emem. This was a really close decision with my class winner. A lovely balanced dog who excels in temperament and movement. Harsh coat. Good prominent forechest. Reachy neck. Well ribbed-up and lovely underline. A well-deserved Champion; Reserve CC today.

3rd: Kugow & Holt’s Ch Waldmeister Johnson JW

Minor Puppy Bitch (5 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: Poxon’s Upto Mischief Diervilla Via Kapodach. Extrovert, 7 month brindle, bitch of correct size, but still rather raw. A bit more ground clearance than is required. Slightly short in upper arm. Good ribbing. Good rear angulation. The best mover in this class and she was true coming towards me. Decent coat.

2nd: Jones’ Bimini From Russia with Love. Neat brindle with a very good coat. Shorter in the leg than 1. Correct proportions. Lovely prominent forechest. Well let down hocks. Her movement let her down today – not sure if that was just a lack of training.

3rd: Harker’s Hadoka Skip to My Lou

Puppy Bitch (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Thorn-Andrews’ Drakesleat Scent Sybil. Very balanced brindle puppy with lovely front construction (again from this kennel); prominent breastbone. Adequate ground clearance. Good length of ribbing and flowing underline. Moved true coming and going and holds a lovely topline in profile movement. Not the harshest of coats, but easily forgiven when her construction and movement is so good. A lovely puppy, with great potential. Best Puppy in Breed.

2nd: Jones’ Bimini Out of the Blue. Correct sized puppy with a lovely harsh coat. Well-angulated in front and rear. Good amount of forechest, but not the length of ribbing, or quality of movement of 1.

3rd: Morris’s Stargang Quintina at Pennywave

Junior Bitch (7 Entries) Abs: 3

1st: Hayward’s Foxearth Fatma Salkan. Harsh-coated red bitch who looks a picture stacked and was clearly bold and outgoing. Really good front and layback of shoulder. However, like many MWs, she tends to straighten-up somewhat behind, when on the move in profile. Ribs go well back and she has a lovely underline. Excellent dark eye and pigment.

2nd: Thorn-Andrews’ Drakesleat May Contain Nuts. Softer-coated brindle, who excels in neck and front construction. Very well-angulated behind which she uses to drive in profile and going away. Absolutely true front movement coming towards me as you’d expect with this front construction.

3rd: Marston-Teal’s Lordscarnie Look of Love

Yearling Bitch (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Daykin’s Barratini Hot Gossip. Well laid-back shoulder and adequate length of upper arm. Would prefer a bit more length of leg and ground clearance. Good forechest. Preferred her hind angulation and bend of stifle compared with 2. Well let down hocks. Coat not as harsh as 2.

2nd: Blackburn’s Banburg Black Opal at Stargang. Excellent coat on this brindle bitch. Lovely neck and prominent forechest, with visible dimples! Too much depth of body and lack of ground clearance. Felt she was slightly over-long in lower thigh and that she didn’t have the drive behind of 1. Lovely topline which she held at all times.

3rd: Gore’s Spaladino Sweet Angel Face

Post Graduate Bitch (10 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: Rigby’s Waldmeister Maud for Rigadac. Although this brindle was bigger than the desired maximum weight, she was very well made. Good length of upper arm and well laid-back shoulder placement. Good bend of stifle and not excessively long in lower thigh. Reasonable coat. Firm topline held at all times. Tidy, flowing underline; not cut up at all. Very true movement both coming and going.

2nd:Kugow & Holt’s Waldmeister Hattie. Very houndy type with and excellent harsh coat. More on the leg than 1, but the Breed Standard does call for adequate ground clearance and she fits the bill. Her topline was better on the move than when stacked. Her hind end lacks angulation and consequently she did straighten-up when on the move. She has a good amount of forechest and excelled in length of ribbing. As with all her kennel-mates, she had the correct, bold, outgoing temperament.

3rd: Adams’ Angleholm Aida

Limit Bitch (6 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Dance’s Emem Candy Sunshine. What a stunning little bitch with a truly outgoing personality, presented and handled to perfection. Absolutely correct proportions for the Breed Standard and with adequate ground clearance. Her hindquarters are well-angulated and she has well let-down hocks. If I were to be super-critical, I’d prefer a bit more length of upper arm. True movement coming and going and just flows in profile movement. Bitch CC, her first, and Best of Breed. Delighted to see her go on to take Best in Show. I see she is a daughter of my dog RCC winner. I will watch her progress with interest.

2nd: Mcleod & Hassall’s Janjac Mac Zeen. Another quality bitch who excelled in coat. Reachy neck and good amount of forechest. Slightly deeper in body than 1 and not quite the ground clearance. Could do with more length of upper arm. Lovely, flowing underline. Held a correct topline on the move.

3rd: Howell’s Fallowmill On The Button JW Sh CM

Open Bitch (8 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Marston-Teal’s Ch Lordscarnie Love Life. An elegant brindle bitch with a good coat who moved out with drive and style. Very good forechest, with obvious dimples and good length of upper arm, plus well laid-back shoulder. Good length of ribbing and a neat, tidy underline. Held a correct topline at all times. Good bend of stifle, which gives her excellent hind drive and parallel movement going away. Very true coming towards me. Interesting to see she is a half-brother to my dog RCC winner. Reserve Bitch CC.

2nd: Thorn-Andrews’ Drakesleat Ott Favourite. A similar type to 1, well-balanced with an excellent topline and neat underline. Elegant, reachy neck. Prominent forechest and very well put together front construction. Could perhaps do with a touch more ground clearance. Absolutely true parallel hind movement going away.

3rd: Blackburn-Bennett’s Ch Stargang Czarina
