It was a privilege to judge my own breed in which I bred several World Winners and International Champions in the last two decades. Thank you to the Committee for the invitation and each and every exhibitor who decided to bring their dogs, creating a fantastic entry both by quantity and quality, and asking my opinion, it meant a lot to me. I have been visiting the large shows in the UK since the 80’s and the improvement specifically in this breed is very obvious. While the breeders managed to keep the size well the type got better. I have seen many dogs with good ground clearance, legs not too short and long “enough” functional neck. Head-type also changed for the better. Apple-headed dogs with strong stop, round eyes and short muzzle seemed to slowly disappear. The anatomical features have always been good in the UK with good shoulders and forechest. Luckily I could see only a few specimens with a little “bassety” wrinkled pasterns, which usually go together with too much dewlaps. I was looking for a working dog with good substance but without coarseness. The Dachshund must be strong but rather dry in its build to be fit and elegant. Too much exaggeration being undesirable. I find it untypical (but very fancy nowadays) and penalised dogs being rather in “terrier type” in Dachshunds. It means the lack of substance and forechest. These dogs are pretty, elegant and showy, but do not fit to the essence of the breed. Another obvious good feature was the correct tailset in most of the exhibits, the natural continuation of a slightly sloping croup. This is an actual problem on the Continent in the breed (high tailset and-carriage). I made several notes in my judge’s book mentioning that “I would like to have the dog in my house”. It tells everything about my great day in the ring!

VD 1 Daykin’s Ch Barratini Jonny Cash. A red veteran in superb quality. The most beautiful head, eyes and breed typical expression melting my soul. Correct front, long upper arm, good forechest, correct topline and tail carriage. A very correct breed typical movement. A dog to remember. BEST VETERAN IN BREED. 2 Melbourne’s D’arisca Flaunt It At Melriding. Another red with good breed type, slightly more sizey than 1st. Lovely masculine head, correct front with good forechest. Clean and dry pasterns, correct topline and movement. Close decision. 3 Smith & Connor’s Ch Bronia Gregorio JW ShCM. A black and tan with gorgeous silhouette. Nice head expression, good ground clearance, correct forechest, long upper arm, keeping his topline well on the move. His front slightly showed his age.

MPD 1 Charlesworth’s Keydax Peter Pan. He caught my eye and heart. The best of heads with great expression. Already perfect balance with a substance desired in his age. Superb neck, perfect body length, correct quarters. Certainly one whom I would like to see again in 2 years time!! 2 Daykin’s Carpaccio Jack Jones At Barratini. Lovely puppy with a well balanced silhouette helped by his lovely, elegant neck and correct topline. Moved well. I would prefer more dry head, hopefully comes with maturity. 3 Strange’s Stargang Magic Alfie Moon. A very promising puppy, certainly needs more time to get ready. Slightly longer in his body as 1st and 2nd. Correct quarters, moved well. Excellent topline. His head could be a bit more chiselled. PD 1 Gentle’s Dimogen Stargazer. A beautiful, strong, elegant, masculine black and tan, excellent size, long rib cage with good spring of ribs. Lovely head and expression. A perfect combination of elegance, substance and functional conformation. Strong without being coarse anywhere. Correct front, forechest, topline, tail carriage. Handled to perfection. Best Puppy Male, BEST PUPPY IN BREED. 2 Francis Stargang Hay Bob At Feebrick. A correctly built red. Masculine head, but I prefer the expression of the 1st. Good neck, excellent front. Well sprung ribs, correct topline and tailset. Lovely overall balance. Moved well. 3 Kent’s Lokmadi Tigre. A very promising black and tan with similar type, and quality to 1st. Nicely headed, excellent neck, correct front with a good length of upperarm. Well angulated hind legs. His topline on the move needs to improve in the future. JD 1 Beach’s Lodargeo Volcano. An eyecatching black and tan dark dapple. Masculine, strong, elegant. Excellent substance, good ribcage. Lovely head & expression. Correct anatomical features. A good combination of elegance, showiness, strength and functionality. He had that little “extra” attitude owning the ring on the move. I happily awarded the Dog Res.CC to him. I can see a great future in front of him! 2 Owen’s Gwendary Pickpocket. A very sound red. Masculine, pleasing head. Superb balance and substance. Correct front and rear. Well ribbed up. Moved well from every angle. 3 Dunhill’s Gellijams Russian Sun. He made the most beautiful picture standing. Gorgeous masculine head, perfect balance and substance with good length of his strong neck. Good forechest and front. Strong, well angulated fore and hindl egs. On the move he tended to lose his topline. This feature will be fixed with time. It will be difficult to beat him!

YD 1 Hunt’s Wolferlow George Brown At Carpaccio. A nice chocolate and tan. Lovely head. I would prefer a bit more dense coat on his ears. Correct neck, shoulders & front. Correct topline, well angulated, well muscled quarters. Moved well. 2 Kay’s Zilveraat Altered Carbon At Lochlip. A nicely headed black and tan. Strong, masculine without being overdone in any way. Correct forechest, topline, tailset. Well angulated hindl egs. Moved well, slightly narrow in front. 3 Poulier’s Auradach Alfred The Great. A strongly built nice black and tan. Masculine head with pleasing expression. Correct neck, balance and substance. He made a lovely picture standing, his front and topline have a room for improvement in the future.

PGD 1 Strevens Kazamour’s Gingerbread Man. Nice red, a lot to like on him. Lovely head, good neck. He really excels in his front and forechest. Good ground clearance, correct topline and tailset. Excellent substance without any signs of coarseness. Moved well. A great dog! 2 Scott’s Rothadax In The Nick Of Time. A correctly built black and tan. Nice masculine head and expression. Strong neck well laid back shoulders, good length of the upperarm. I always appreciate these kind of good dogs, whose main benefit is not having any obvious or disturbing fault and having good overall quality. 3 Jennings Duddondaxs Judge Jude For Jenivon. A strong, masculine red. Pleasing head. Good neck, correct shoulders. Excellent substance, well angulated hind legs. Moved with correct topline expressing good character, but slightly narrow front. LD 1 Roberts Wingcrest Supersonic To Denver. A beautiful black and tan. Superb head and his expression goes straight to one’s soul! An elegant dog also with excellent substance. Correct shoulders, long upperarm. Clean pasterns. Evenly angulated front and rear causes a well balanced powerful movement with correct topline. 2 Andison & Peel’s Clentry Hear Me Roar. A fantastic red in classic type. Beautiful head, long and strong neck. Correct anatomical attributes, front, forechest, topline, tailset. Good substance and balance. It was a hard decision to be made. Small details like sickle shape tail had to be taken into consideration. A truly great dog! 3 Williams Wilmerella Go West. A lovely red, well up on his legs. Nice head, correct quarters, excellent topline. I would prefer a little bit longer sternum to get a better underline. Excellent substance. Moved well.

OD A very strong class. I was spoilt for choice, felt like I was in Disneyland. 1 Meier & Cheong’s Int Ch Minidogland Take After Sun WW 18 [ATC AW02966RUS]. A breathetaking dog, who hit me with his unusual quality! An elegant, masculine, long head. Gorgeous, strong neck flows into his well laid back shoulders. Great forechest. He is correct in every angle standing and moving. A great combination of masculinity, elegance, strength and functionality supported by his absolute great outgoing temperament. Handled with perfection. Every step he took was perfect. Certainly a dog I will remember! My Dog CC, BOB and I was happy to see a small, short coated dog to win 4th in the strong Hound Group! 2 Ergis Siouxline Jacob JW. A gorgeous red. Masculine, strong and elegant. Typical head and expression. Shoulders, upperarm, forechest to die for. Not surprisingly he was able to use his correct quarters perfectly on the move. One could serve a glass of drink onto his correct topline. An exceptional quality he has! 3 Beach’s Izia Klara Difino (Imp SVN). Another elegant, strongly built red. Masculine head, good expression. A very elegant outline. Correct topline, good balance and substance. Moved well. I would prefer a slightly more round shape of his forechest. GOOD

DOG

1 Baker & Clements Duke Midnight William. A nice chocolate and tan. Slightly low in his built. A pleasing head. Slight throatness. Excellent substance, correct forechest. He kept his correct topline on the move. 2 Thompson’s Black Buttons Sweet Heart. A nicely headed black and tan. Good, friendly temperament. Good neck, front and topline. Sternum a little bit short, causes slightly too much tuck up in his underline. Moved well.

VB 1 Cumberland’s Whirlygig Wottatodoo At Mumysami. She belongs to the old fashioned “British type”. Feminine head with quite a strong stop and sweet expression. Shortish neck, strong forechest, good front, but has horizontal wrinkles on her pasterns. Correct hind legs. Moved well. 2 Cumberland’s Mumysami Raluch ShCM. A lovely black and tan. Nice head and expression, good temperament. Elegant neck, correct shoulders. Good balance and substance. I would prefer a bit better topline on the move, where she also carried her tail high.

MPB 1 Charlesworth’s Keydax Pennies From Heaven. An eyecatching red puppy with the best of heads end expression. Elegant neck, already great forechest. Correct topline, superb ground clearance and the sweetest possible character. Moved well. 2 Charlesworth’s Keydax Pixie. A very feminine black and tan in a very similar superb quality as of the 1st. Lovely feminine head, good temperament, correctly built with excellent balance and substance. Moved well already with correct topline. She should have more coat on the day especially on inner side of her tight. 3 Carey’s Mystery Maiden For Debbiejay. A red puppy with a very elegant outline. Lovely head, superb neck. She is a bit longer in body as of 1st and 2nd. Plenty of substance, well ribbed up. Correct quarters. Moved well. Her topline should improve in the future.

PB 1 Rose’s Ardenrun Foolish Whisper. A shaded red with good maturity to her age. A beautiful outline with excellent breed type. Strong, feminine and very well balanced. Lovely head. Correct neck, shoulders, topline. Moved well. Best Puppy Bitch. 2 Beer’s Stargang Candy Stripes At Lowrider. A nice brindle. Lovely long head with good expression. Quite low earset. Well balanced, excellent silhouette. Correct neck, forechest and topline. Evenly angulated front and rear makes a well balanced movement. 3 Mills-Jones Carlita Welsh Princess. A nicely headed red. Correct neck, excellent forechest, slightly long in loin. Correct quarters. Level topline, correct tailset. A little narrow front on the move. JB 1 Coxon’s Sundsdal’s Black Cadillac To D’arisca. A VERY strong class has been won by this superb black and tan. She has all the important breed features I am looking for. Lovely, feminine head with almond shape eyes, sweet expression. Elegant, but strong neck. Good forechest, level topline, good ground clearance, correct croup. Moved correctly and with pride. I can see a great future in front of her! 2 Roberts Denver Darling Take Me Home. Another beautiful black and tan combining elegance and strength with femininity, breed type and functionality. It was a very tough decision between 1st and 2nd. I could easily have these two in my house and I do not say this often! 3 Bell’s Tolberg Jelly Tot. Another quality black and tan. A little bit lower in her build and longer in her body. Nice, feminine head, good forechest, strong neck. Level topline, correct round croup. Moved well.

YB 1 Ergis Siouxline Rachel JW. Sje is just everything I really like in this breed. Sweet, feminine head and a silhouette that makes a breeder-judge emotional. So many good memories came to my mind. A quality that does not need to be explained, it shines out and is so obvious. Difficult to find anything I would change on her. It will be very difficult to beat her when she reaches her heyday. 2 Zaivej’s Ch Victorypaw Takara Ch J Lt. A very elegant red. Well up on her legs. I would prefer a slightly longer underjaw. Superb neck, forechest and front. Correct topline, well angulated hind legs. Moved well. 3 Blackburn’s Stargang Desert Orchid. A nice, feminine red with superb breed type. Lovely head, correct neck, front with good forechest. Evenly angulated front and rear. She tended to lose her topline on her move. PGB 1 Mason’s Teckeltown You’re The One JW. Love at first sight! A quality what one can seldom find. Beautiful head. Just perfect neck and great, round forechest without being short on her legs. Perfect, not terrier-like topline with slightly round croup. Plenty of substance, but still keeps the ground clearance perfect. Real eye candy for an expert. Thank you for coming!! My Bitch Res.CC. 2 Blackburn-Bennett’s Stargang Mary Rose. Another superb, feminine red. A quality which speaks for itself. Gorgeous head, correct forechest. Good topline. Correct angulation. She makes a lovely picture standing and moving with her good balance and substance. The front was the deciding factor between 1st and 2nd. 3 Strange’s Cazdachs Ziva David. A strongly built red with lovely head. Correct neck, I would prefer slightly longer upperarm. Correct topline, good front, correct tailset - and carriage. Moved well.

LB 1 Mutton’s Montone Be Brave. A strongly built, feminine lovely female. Nicely headed. Excellent neck, forechest. Well up on her legs. Correct topline with round croup causing a correct tail carriage. Her great temperament only help while moved around the ring! 2 Russell’s Russtecktea Cake. An elegant, noble black and tan. Lovely head, correct neck. Strong but also dry in her build. Correct topline and front. Correct movement from every angle. 3 Harwood’s Paradigm Dark Star. Strongly built, but still feminine, black and tan. Lovely head, excellent overall balance. Correct front and topline. Well angulated hind legs. Moved well with a slightly high tail carriage.

OB 1 Martini Paola’s Diengels Denny Rose [ATC AX00404ITA]. A model of the breed representing a unique quality. Feminine head, elegant neck, strong, round forechest together with a perfect ground clearance. A topline ready to serve a drink from, being so level while standing and moving. A sound, feminine, type dog whose extra points does not affect her breed type and functionality. Moved perfectly without a single mistake. I am deeply impressed by her quality. My Bitch CC. 2 Reynolds Ch Cwmdarhian The Xfactor. A great moving superb red. It was not surprising after exploring her correct conformation and balance. A little deep in chest, but the functional correct movement made everything right. Nevertheless her underjaw I would prefer to be a little bit longer and stronger. 3 Ergis Ch Siouxline Rapunzel With Melriding. Excellent type. Lovely feminine head. Elegant neck, good forechest. She has a perfect silhouette with her correct topline and quarters. I would prefer her front to be better.

GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME BITCH

1 Mason’s Teckeltown You’re The One JW. The winner of the Post Graduate Class. 2 Taylor’s Debbiejay Magical Flo. A feminine red in superb quality. Excellent breed type and overall quality. Nicely headed. Correct topline, ground clearance and silhouette. Pushed 1st hard but the front was the deciding factor. 3 Rose’s Pennydach Mystique. Another quality red. Feminine and strongly built. Feminine head & expression. Correct neck, shoulders and forechest. Correct topline and croup. Moved well.
