MINIATURE SMOOTH HAIRED

It was great to be part of the Club's first championship show and I appreciated the good entry and sportsmanship of the exhibitors – much more applause for the winners this time! I last judged the variety at Windsor in 2006 so, with just a couple of exceptions, the dogs were new to me. I moaned about front movement last time and this time I found it had improved somewhat and I didn't find many at all whose chests were too near the ground. It was disappointing that several I liked very much on table examination just never matched that potential on the floor, either being restricted movers or lacking the showmanship to stride out around the ring. As I make most of my decisions on the dogs on the move, covering ground and maintaining their outlines, that rather told against them. There are still quite a few round eyes and real head quality is not that common, but you don't see those leathery ears any more and coat condition generally was good and strong. The increase in leg wrinkle worried me and. It usually goes with rather coarse bone and squashy feet, so I was surprised to find it even in animals not that strong in bone and with "little" feet - albeit deep and strong. I wasn't aware of any really short keels, an old bugbear in the variety from way-back, but several with quite decent length of ribbing had back-ribs that were rather short and not giving enough protection to the internal organs. There were also a few with rather "ratty" tails rather than strong stems. There were a few bigger than desirable but I was delighted to find three males and fifteen bitches under ten pounds and three bitches under nine – and not shelly ones either! Temperaments were, as usual, good and sound and overall I was quite happy with the variety and congratulate breeders on breeding-on with the DNA testing in the forefront of their minds without losing "type". V (5,2) 1. Watkinson's Manakoora Koh-O-Noor. 10 year old red bitch in great nick. Nicely made compact shape and not too low. Clean shouldered and moving eagerly and well, making the most of her chances as do all this breeder's dogs. 2. Callow's Garthome Lady In Black. 8 year old B/T bitch in super coat condition. Very smart with balanced angulation and moved well. A better head, but not the ground clearance of the winner. 3. Endersby's Mowbray Music Man. MPD (5,3) 1. Burtons' Swingle Trees Just-In-Time. Lovely clean-cut quality red of 6 and a half months and under ten pounds. Well-balanced angulation, good head and neck and kept his good outline on the floor, moving well in all ways. 2. Hollands' Zarosa Peeping Tom. 7 months compactly-made B/T with a good topline and moved O.K. but needs keeping at home at this stage – and hoping! PD (11,1) Three lovely boys to head this class. 1. Orton's Cagebrook Thyme To Go to Scalamor. 9 and a half months and another clean-cut quality red who moved freely and well. Prominent forechest, lovely head, good shoulders and topline covered by a quality coat. Best Dog Puppy. 2. Salisbury's Willowheath Just William at Brocklewood. Nearly a year and another red of very good type, giving little away. Good head, neck, topline, width through the front and moved freely and well both ways holding his outline. 3. Swingle Trees Just-In-Time. JD (6,1) 1. Willowheath Just William at Brocklewood. 2. Williams' Cwmdarhian Benjamin Button. 9 months B/T who is very well-bodied but just not the scope of the winner. Good forechest, shoulder and topline, well let-down rear, good coat condition and moved soundly. Just a little stiff in pastern. 3. Shutt's Pachego Explora for Donnadoon. ND (2) 1. Swingle Trees Just-In-Time. 2. Hurn's Tydurcwrt Morgan at Llanfabon. B/T nearly a year. Lovely quality, length and type with strong coat condition, but can't afford to carry the body he still needs. PGD (2) 1. Watkinson's Manakoora Hawaiian Amakihi. 16 months B/T with a good neck which flows neatly over his shoulder into his topline, but tries to hide his good points on the table by leaning back a bit. Good width through and gets it together on the floor, moving well both ways. 2. Thorne's Lord At The Dance with Knockboy. Lengthy and well-made brindle. A neat little man with a good topline, but tends to slouch and needs more help from his handler. Moved fairly well. LD (10,1) Another very good class with some tough choices and a real battle between the first two. 1. Kent's Barranti Jeeves at Lokmadi. 2 year old B/T and a real showman - almost to the extent of going over the top on the move! Very classy, free-outstanding boy who is all of a piece and moves well. Good head, eye, neck-set, forechest, top and underlines and angulation both ends. Well-covered firm little body and a constantly wagging tail. Put-up a great performance and must be a delight to own and handle. CC. 2. Burtons' Swingletrees Ready Teddy Go. Another classy one the same age, red this time and by another Barratini dog. Lengthy type and full of quality with good head and neck and well-made all round. Also moved well and freely, covering the ground. Just pipped by the winner who was so immaculate at setting himself up in the front when he free-stood. RCC. 3. Blackburn's Sonderbar Ben at Stargang. OD (6,1) 1. Callow's Ch. Garthorne Top Gear. Always something special from this kennel. 3 year old fully mature B/T who was lovely to go over on the table with a good shoulder and upper arm placement giving a good forechest, clean neck running into a firm topline and good width all through. Keeps his shape on the move, but just doesn't go with any "oomph" to project his virtues. 2. Roberts' Ch. Denver Midnight Sun. 2 year old classy, lengthy red of much quality with a lot to admire. Moved well both ways but can overreach a bit in front going around and lose his shape a little. 3. Barber's Ch. Melriding Meruisti. MPB (9,1) 1. Blackburn-Bennett's Stargang Serenity. 7 and a half months red of length and quality with a good head and angulation both ends, standing well over her front and well let down behind. Moves well all ways and beautifully schooled even at this early age. Best Puppy. 2. Burtons' Swingle Trees Amazing-Grace. Another red a month younger and under 10 pounds. Great quality and type, beautifully made but not as ready as the winner and they made a great pair to head this class. 3. Hollands' Zarosa Shades Of Black. PB (15,5) 1. Kent's Toniajavae Indian Passion at Lokmadi. A big name for a little girl. B/T nearly a year and a neat little under 10 pound package who is all of a piece with everything fitting beautifully. Good shoulder placement, neck, topline and enough bone for her size. Like her kennelmate she puts-up a good show on the floor but her exuberance can make her lift her front feet a little on the move. 2. Callow's Garthorne Miss Dynamite. 10 months B/T who was lovely on the table and very satisfying to go over. Lovely type and moved well but another who could project herself more on the floor. 3. Swingle Trees Amazing-Grace. JB (17,6) Nice class down the line. 1. Roberts' Denver Darling Misty Blue. Red just over a year of good length and kept her outline on the move going well both ways. Good forechest, length of ribbing, feet, top and underline and a well-padded "bum". 2. Watkinson's Manakoora Boobie. Plainer-coloured red the same age but in a smaller mould. Well-bodied under ten pounder, well-made and clean-limbed and also moved well both ways. 3. Jones' Batendach Red Light at Radcliffe. NB (9,1) 1. Toniajavae Indian Passion at Lokmadi. Still nearly wagging herself off her feet! 2. Swingle Trees Amazing-Grace. 3. Lee's Pyknikspring Ruby Surprise. PGB (15,3) A super hard-fought class. 1. Blackburn's Sonderbar Billie Jean at Stargang. 16 and a half month red Australian import of intense quality. When she first walked into the ring I knew she would take some beating – sheer class and quality. Lovely head, neck and shoulder placement, well-angulated both ends with good top and underline and good width all through. A free, easy, correct mover and just falls into place when she stops– couldn't take my eyes off her. A real Standard in miniature and, for me, a comfortable CC. and BOB. 2. Shuker's Yewlitt Amelia. 2 year old B/T from another kennel I've done very well in the past and well up to that standard. Smashing little girl in a smaller mould with a super body and also well-angulated and moved well if not with the panache of the winner and slightly larger in eye, but that's nit-picking. 3. Burton's Swingletrees Heaven Leigh. LB (16,6) Quality in depth again. 1. Blackburn-Bennett's Ch. Stargang Lotus Elite. The variety's latest champion and a very worthy one. 2 year old brindle of good type and, again, everything fits and flows and the outline is the same on the move when she keeps her hard topline and covers the ground – all this exhibitor's dogs move as though they mean to get somewhere. Good shoulder placement, legs and feet and a neat rear. Slightly untidy ear carriage compared to the CC. winner, but a more than worthy RCC to her. 2. Watkinson's Manakoora Pandaus. 2 year old under 10 pound B/T I did well in a variety class last year and still impresses enormously. Very well-made indeed –all substance in a small package and covers acres of ground when she moves. Can just stand a trifle "bum-high" at times, but can stand herself without fuss which I always like. 3. Muggleton's Mosiarto Forget Me Not. OB (11,4) 1. Callow's Garthorne Gazania. 4 year old red of super type. Very well-made and angulated with a good outline but just drops off a shade over her rear. Moved well. 2. Reed's Deercroft Devotion. Another I have done well in the past and I still rate her highly. Nearly 5 year old red, also very well-made with good shoulder placement, a good body and a good mover both ways. Still insists on getting her tail up a bit! 3. Lombardelli's D'Arisca From Dawn Till Dusk at Kelmbeck. BEST BREEDER Burton's four reds who had all placed very well in their classes and all out of the same bitch from three litters. Very consistent for type and quality and I enjoyed seeing them in the ring together. A new kennel to me but one that's obviously on the right track.
