SMOOTH HAIRED

Overall quality of conformation in this variety is at a very good level. Movement was also of a good standard with most dogs holding their shape in profile action and covering the ground well. Pleased to find fewer of the oversize, heavy ones with too much depth in front and weak hindquarters than when I last judged Smooths a few years ago. Temperaments were reasonably good, with only a few apprehensive ones.

PD
(8, 3) 1 Hunt’s Am Ch Bessdachs Beam Me Up. Eye-catching 12 month old black and tan of correct size, who commands attention as he enters the ring. Compact and well balanced, with good bone and substance and overall body shape. Well angulated at both ends and poses himself naturally when relaxed. His head is very different than we are used to seeing in the U.K., with a pronounced Roman nose, and I suspect will provoke a “love it or hate it” reaction from judges and fellow breeders. Covers the ground well, with power and purpose, and accurate up and back movement. Exciting prospect both as an exhibit, and for his breeding potential. CC. and BPIB. 2 Furber’s Gameron Smart Choice for Dorysa. Similar size to 1st. Elegant black and tan, sharing the same sire as my BOB. Immature as yet at just 7 months, but showing a good deal of promise, as did his litter brother in 3rd. Pleasing head and expression, good reach of neck and well placed shoulders. Well angulated behind. Moving freely in profile, although a little unco-ordinated at times, as to be expected from such a young pup. 3 Graham’s Gameron Simply Red.

JD
(1) 1 Hunt’s Lauralee Living Daylights at Carpaccio. Impressive, larger sized black and tan with very masculine outlook and great ring presence. Well proportioned head carried proudly on a lengthy neck. Good shoulder placement, firm topline and well angulated quarters. Possesses good bone and substance throughout. Moved out freely holding a good shape in profile. In gleaming, well muscled condition and very well handled.

PGradD
(2,1) 1 Higgins’ Matzell Midnight Harbour For Leveliss. Another by Lauralee Roll of Honour via Rijobeau, who is obviously proving himself to be a useful sire, as I notice I put up several of his offspring. Shaded red with good bone and substance throughout. Pleasing head with keen, expressive dark eyes. Well placed shoulders and plenty of forechest as a result. Hindquarters a little tucked under, due to slightly incorrect set of pelvis, and this affected his topline on the move unfortunately.

LD
(7,1) 1 Davies’ Undeg Humming Top. Elegant red who carries himself well on the move and strides out freely with great style. So well constructed throughout with pleasing head and expression, good reach of neck flowing into a rock-solid firm, level topline held in stance and profile movement. Well angulated fore and aft and of correct size for a male. Handler could project him a little more to advantage. Fluid mover, who covered the ground with ease. 2 McNaughton’s Cedavoch Honour Bound. Lengthy black and tan of different type to 1st, being longer-cast, lower and heavier built. Impressive outline, with well placed shoulders and excellent hind angulation. Just a little longer in loin than 1st. Has good bone and substance throughout and carries himself proudly with assurance on the move. Well handled. Just preferred the more compact overall outline and ground clearance of 1st. 3 Starkey’s Carpaccio Top Of The Class at Hamoura.

OD
(5,1) 1 Cooper’s Ch. Sontag Simon Le Bone. Quality black and tan with eye-catching outline. Appealing head with masculine outlook and powerful jaw. Good reach of neck, flowing into firm, level topline held in stance and in action. Good shoulder placement, body shape, ground clearance and hind angulation. Covers the ground with a powerful stride. Just a little unsettled at times. Res. CC. 2 McCarthay’s Ch. Seatris Laced with Success. Last judged this classy black and tan veteran as a youngster, and he still appeals for overall quality of conformation, possessing a lovely head and expression and excellent breed type, free of any exaggeration. Good outline and balance, with well placed shoulders, good body shape and topline and moderately angulated quarters. Holds his shape well on the move. In gleaming condition and very well handled. 3 McNaughton’s Cedavoch Galadrim.

PB (8,1) Strong class of lovely pups at different stages of development with quality right down the line. 1 Punter’s Abbagirls Here I Am At Welcumen. Lengthy shaded red with impressive elegant outline. Also sired by Roll of Honour. Maturing well. Loved her well proportioned head and feminine outlook. Built on flowing lines with reachy neck, well placed shoulders, correct body shape and well angulated hindquarters. Showing great promise for the future. Just needs to settle a little more on the move, but time will take care of that as she is only 8 months old. 2 Hunt’s Lauralee Miss Chokey Wokey. More immature chocolate of lovely size. Well balanced, with correct length to height ratio. Excellent firm, level topline held at all times in stance and movement. Feminine, well proportioned head with good eye shape. Moves out confidently with freedom in profile and with accurate parallel action up and back. Just needing maturity of body to complete the picture. Sired by the Res. CC winner. 3 Norton’s Matzell Mildred.

JB
(2,1) 1 McNaughton’s Cedavoch I Love To Boogie. Stylish, lengthy rich red with a high level of quality of conformation. Well placed shoulders with plenty of forechest, firm topline and sweeping underline. Powerful, well angulated hindquarters complete the picture and she is well boned with good substance throughout, but without losing her femininity. Covered the ground with ease and well handled to get the very best from her. Quality bitch to be proud of.

PGradB
(5,1) 1 Turner’s Marictur Moulin Rouge. Beautiful clear red of perfect size, presenting an elegant, well balanced outline. Everything fits together so well and my hands just flowed over her on the table. Loved her head, reachy neck, correctly placed shoulders, rock-solid level topline and well angulated quarters. Her impressive construction translated into effortless, ground-covering action in profile and accurate parallel movement up and back. Full of quality and free from exaggeration Also sired by Roll of Honour. Pleased to award her first CC and BOB. 2 Jones’ Hampdach Rich Returns with Indizak. Black and tan with appealing head and expression. Different type to 1st, being a little heavier built and with slightly less ground clearance. Well constructed, and carries herself well on the move, however, tailset just detracts a little from overall outline. Sometimes a touch over-exuberant on the move, but very sound and holds her shape well in profile action. In lovely condition and well handled. 3 Higgins’ Matzell Morning Chorus For Leveliss.

LB
(7,2) 1 Mitchell’s Dubreys Dora The Explora. Elegant, correct size red with good ground clearance and firm, level topline held in stance and on the move. Feminine head and keen expression, reachy neck and moderate angulation at both ends. Held her topline and overall shape the best in this class, with enthusiastic free-striding action. Just a little steep in underline, but a quality bitch overall. Appeared to be a little in between coats at present. 2 Jones’ Phaeland Secret Diva to Adnerb. Chunkier shaded red with good overall quality of conformation. Well bodied, with good bone and substance, well sprung ribs and pleasing body shape. Moved out well, holding her shape in profile. Just preferred overall elegance and head of 1st. 3 Lovick-Gibbs’ Roleta Keeping Up Appearances.

OB
(5,1) 1 Hunt’s Ch. Carpaccio Precious Pearl. Elegant Black and Tan of quality with eye-catching outline. Well balanced and everything fits and flows together seamlessly when examined on the table. Appealing well proportioned feminine head carried on reachy neck. well placed shoulders, good body shape and flow of underline leading to well angulated quarters. Fluid mover who covered the ground with ease holding her shape in profile. Perfect size. Res CC. 2 Norton’s Ch. Matzell Maid of Honour. Impressive red of equal merit to 1st but of different type. Very satisfying to go over on the table, possessing well placed shoulders, plenty of forechest, level topline, good depth of body and well angulated hindquarters. Good bone and substance throughout. Her quality of conformation is reflected in powerful, active movement and she holds her outline at all times. Another by roll of honour and out of the bitch I gave a Res. CC. to last time I judged this variety. 3 Goad’s Rosanport Play Me.
