I would like to thank the association for the invitation to judge today, to the exhibitors for entering & to Bill Evans, my steward for the day, who did a great job as usual. This was the first time I had judged my favourite breed in nearly 10 years since Crufts 2007. I know this wasn’t a very representative entry, but I was very disappointed in the overall quality of the breed today.

Heads seemed to be either good or very untypical. All dogs were clean & groomed but oh dear, where the breed really fails is shoulders. So many had short almost vertical scapulas to match the ever present short upper arms resulting in poor reach in front. Is this because breeders don’t understand the construction of the shoulders, I don’t know. Very worrying when Longs have always been a very elegant variety in the past with good shoulder placement & correct neck length, not cloddy with no stride.

I was completely happy with my principal winners whose quality shone through & indeed my bitch line up was very pleasing so I guess all is not lost.

PD (2) 1 Ranglewood McNab, good head, eye could be darker, very good bone & feet, excellent pro-sternum, ribbing carried well back, balanced front & rear. Sound on the move. BP; 2 Wardax Indian Summer by Bonavoir, unfortunately seemed lame today. JD (1) 1 Rossann Bonnie Blue, good head & eye shape, he could do with a bit more angulation front & rear. YD (3,2a) 1 Cedavoch The Alchemist, lovely head & eye, good neck. Would prefer better lay of shoulder, good forechest, excellent bone & ribbing, well angulated quarters. Moved out well covering plenty of ground. PGD (3,1) 1 Metadale Moment Of Glory, correct head, good eye shape & colour, good neck, fair shoulder, balanced quarters. He has a most unfortunate coat which totally spoils his outline. Perhaps a little more muscletone is needed to tighten up his topline; 2 Darsoms Zabbi, very well conditioned red dog who was sympathetically handled. His head is not his fortune, he has super bone & feet. Sound on the move. LD (6,2) 1 Ranglewood Arashi, shaded red of good proportions. Good head & eye, shoulder could be better positioned, however blade & upper arm are of good length, ribs OK, good forechest, bone & feet. He kept a good outline & moved well with good reach & drive; 2 Abydachs Seize The Night, beautifully proportioned head, correct eye, not as much angulation as my winner but he is balanced, correct bone & feet. Moved soundly; 3 Dachslur In His Prime. OD (5) 1 Swansford Warrador, this dog was presented & put down as a Long Haired should be & looked the part. Head is OK & eye shape good, long neck, well angulated shoulder, correct forechest, wonderful bone & feet, good ribbing & short loin, well angulated quarters with just the right length to rear pastern. Moved with correct width fore & aft & it was my pleasure to award him a well deserved 3rd CC; 2 Ch Teckel Rumour Has It, beautiful head & eye, decent neck, shoulder a little forward, good forechest, would prefer more return of upper arm, excellent bone & feet, well angulated quarters. Moved out well covering good ground with plenty of drive. RCC; 3 Ch River Rumpus through Dachalune. VD (2,1) 1 Rogermardax Senor Mirlo, enjoying his day out, not really in show condition so unfair to comment. Happy old man with good temperament. Handled well.

MPB (4,2) 1 Dachalune Araxia, lovely head, dark almond eye, good neck, fair shoulder, needs to lengthen in rib, a little steep in croup, moved with good width fore & aft, handled ell & in super condition; 2 Dachalune Amelina at Rodima, again a lovely head & eye, good neck, fair shoulder, better balance in outline than her sister but moving very narrowly towards me. PB (3) 1 Abydachs One Night Only, pretty head, good neck & lay of shoulder, good bone & feet. She has decent ribbing but seemed a little over long in loin, balanced hindquarters. Sound enough on the move. BPB; 2 Ranglewood Mistletoe, lovely head, nice dark eye, good bone & feet, fair shoulder angulation but a little forward placed, good rear angulation. Sound on the mover but just lost her outline a little; 3 Dachalune Abella. JB (5,1) 1 Cedavoch Circe, red girl of quality. Good head, dark eye, good neck, shoulder could be better placed, good forechest & bone, very well angulated quarters with correct first & second thigh, moved with great drive; 2 Trixhund You Are My World, different type to my winner but also of good quality, she was unlucky today to meet two very good bitches in her classes. Very pretty head with correct dark almond eye, good neck, shoulder, decent forechest & good ribbing, balanced hindquarters. I just felt I would like her to cover more ground as she moves in profile; 3 Dachalune Annysia. YB (2) 1 Rangeewood Laurel, very good quality young lady, lovely head, eye shape & colour could be better, long neck, well placed shoulder with good return of upper arm, well ribbed, short loin, well balanced quarters, moved well with good extension. Liked her very much but threw it away in the challenge with a strange handler; 2 T You are My World. PGB (2) A. LB (8,4) 1 Ranglewood Tempest, very honest sort of bitch I thought. Would have preferred a more refined head & maybe a touch more length to ribbing but otherwise she was very pleasing. She has a good front & correct angulation front & rear & certainly moves covering the ground well. I am sure her day will come; 2 Metadale Midsummer Dream, another bitch of very nice type. I prefer a little more refinement in head but she had a good neck, plenty of forechest, good ribbing, short loin, well angulated quarters with correct second thigh & rear pastern of the right length. She moved out well but was just a bit soft in topline today; 3 Whartona Megan Mayhem at Rodima. OB (3,1) Only two present but gave me a headache! 1 Ch Cedavoch Kismet, lovely head, good eye shape & colour, good neck, well angulated shoulder in the correct position, lovely forechest & ribbing carried well back, excellent bone, slight fall on croup, good length to first & second thigh. In super coat & condition. Moved very soundly keeping her correct profile. CC & BOB, thrilled to watch her get BIS, well done; 2 Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Summer Wine, very attractive little bitch of very different type to my winner. Beautiful head, maybe even better with more underjaw, good neck, excellent pro-sternum, bone & feet, well balanced in her angulation. I felt Kismet covered the ground better today, nevertheless well deserved RCC. VB (5) 1 Ch Ranglewood Genista, very smart bitch who looks very well still & in super coat & condition. This exhibitor was certainly very consistent today winning several classes with nice quality Dachshunds; 2 Metadale Make A Decision; 3 Dachslur Diamond Daisy May.
