WELKS

Miniature Wire Dachshunds

I last judged this variety in 2007, which made this a very interesting appointment. It was nice to have a few good reds, who also had harsh coats. I am pleased to say that there were no dogs I regarded as thin, and the few that weighed more than 11lbs only did so by a few ounces.what was interesting was the weight of some, dogs that I had considered a lovely size from the ringside being too heavy in reality. However the breed standard is in my view very sensible now and allows judges to penalise as they seem fit and to the degree.

Type was by mixed - and this in an entry for a judge that most people probably know my interpretation of type within the standard.

Heads we surprisingly mixed, a few were narrow right through rather than conical, and some had rather a short muzzle, in fact one bitch reminded me of a Norfolk Terrier, although she was not red!

On the whole mouths were good, all had a scissor bite bar 1 that was v tight, almost even. However there were 3 with canines that were inverted, and these were very heavily penalised.

Coats were mixed, a few soft coats (although these tended to be well trimmed), some dogs rather out of coat, I guess hoping to be fully in coat for the bulk of the season, and some whose coats were ready to come out. I tried to see through some of the bad trimming, but here is an area where exhibitors can watch, ask and learn to improve their chances. Another area where exhibitors could help their chances is in the lack of muscle. A few I liked v much were rather soft, which reflected in their movement. Some teeth were in need of a clean.

I was rather pleased with the evenness of the bitch line up.

Minor Puppy D (2)

2 nice ones to start, I now see they are brothers.

1ST     BARRATINI TEDDYBOY AT LOKMADI (MR M & MRS Y KENT)

Super young d, has a really good head, long and masc. darkest of eyes. Long neck. Welllaid shoulder, a fraction short in upper arm. Tight feet. Prominent forechest. He is just a fraction longer than ideal, but firm in topline. Well made rear. Found the long wet grass a bit heavy going, but when he got into a stride was sound and really liked the way he used his rear. Coat just coming in.

When it came to the challenge despite his rawness he was the one I would most have wanted to have. CC & BP

2ND     BARRATINI TED ASTAIRE AT GRANHOWARD (MRS PA GRANT)

V nice type and excellent proportions. Also making heavy weather of the ground. Lengthy masc head, long necks liked his front. Tight feet. Well sprung ribs. Not the rear of 1.

 Puppy D (4)

1ST     BARRATINI TEDDYBOY AT LOKMADI (MR M & MRS Y KENT)

 2ND     LORDSCAIRNIE MOMENT OF LOVE (MRS S F MARSTON-TEAL)

Has a v pleasing outline. Most super head, long and masc with darkest of eyes. Long neck. Correct angle in his front angulation, but is rather close between the legs and feet need to improve. Well ribbed. Liked his rear, so v good going away and held a better topline than 3.

 3RD     VERRAMI EN TRAC (MRS R E A BARNEY)

 Junior D (6,3)

 All of different types.

1ST     RIDANFLIGHT RICARDO (MR S ROSE)

V showy d, who went round v well. Is just a fraction long. Head is masc, lengthy, looks a bit broad in skull, but this is mainly hair. Has a lengthy neck. Correct front assembly. Well ribbed. Enough forechest. His strength of rear helped on the move. Slightly over size, but carrying enough weight. I would prefer him just a bit houndier in type.

 2ND     METCROFT RASPBERRY BERET ( MESSERS G R & M A BUCKLE & FLOWERS

Is probably better proportioned, but lacks depth of chest. Head is long, lovely muzzle, skull just slopes off slightly. Strong neck. Quite a good front. Super jacket. Could be firmer in rear and not as positive going away.

3RD     PALSUZ BASIL (MRS P MILLER)

 Post Grad D (3,1)

1ST     WALDMEISTER ROVA TO YOU EMEM (MRS M M DANCE)

Has correct proportions and good ground clearance with enough depth of chest. Super head, dark, medium size almond eyes giving a lovely expression. Would like a bit more neck. His angulation is well balanced, if too moderate.  Well ribbed back with correct length of keel. Slightly rounded in topline on move and comes towards a  bit close in front. Used his rear v well. Thick coat and undercoat, correct texture.

2ND     HIGH FLYER AT FORBELL (MISS B POWELL)

Rather too low in front, and keel ends too far forward.  Good coat. Dark eyes, which are almond. Long neck quite a good rear.

 Limit D (2)

1ST     FOXEARTH FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (MR T & MRS B HAYWARD)

Smart red with a super coat, holds his outline on move. Lengthy head, but just a bit narrow. Super neck into long, well laid shoulder. Needs more forechest. Ribs go well back. Shapely rear. Lovely thick tail. Could be better out and back and in harder muscle.

2ND     TAREE SCOVILLE AT WIREFUSION (MR R S HAYWARD

Quite a nice type of d with a super jacket. Liked his head. Lengthy neck. Fair shoulder, just a bit short in upper arm. Ribs go fairly well back. Could have more hind angulation, and use his rear better on move.

 Open D (3,2)

1ST     CH CURTISEY BOOGY WOOGY JW (MRS I PHILLIPS)

This d looks so much better on move than stood, where his topline levels off. Would like a longer head, he is a bit short in muzzle and eyes could be more almond. Enough length of neck. Nice shoulder. Upper arm is a bit short.Has the most super rib age, short in loin. Strong rear. True out and back, this together with his super coat too RCC.

 Minor Puppy B (4)

1ST     RIDANFLIGHT REMEMBER ME (MR S ROSE)

Smart and showy b, whose proportions I liked. Has a fem head and dark eyes. Lengthy neck. Fairly good front assembly and enough forechest. Has well sprung ribs and a short loin. Could have just a bit more hind angulation. Parallel going away, just lifts her front feet a bit, but could settle. BPB.

2ND     RIDANFLIGHT REPLICA AT FALLOWMILL (MRS J HOWELLS)

Nice proportions, but rather over trimmed and furnishings are softer than her sister. Has a v fem head. Super neck. Could have more prominent sternum. Well sprung ribs, slightly long in loin. Well angulated rear. Goes well.

3RD     COMPANIA PANDORA (MR M & MRS S CROW)

 Puppy B (8)

 Rather a mixed class.

1ST     PALSUZ MEADOW SWEET FOR LEVERSHA (MRS R M & MISS J A BAKER)

This is a v well made b who is good to go over, and you got glimpses of her outline when being bouncy, but she is a happy pup. Fem head. Well off for neck. Well laid shoulder. Upper arm is slightly short. Well sprung ribs, although she is slightly long in loin. Decent rear.

 2ND     COMPANIA PANDORA (MR M & MRS S CROW)

She is rather too long and coat is in need of trimming, but she is a nicely made b who has a decent length of stride in profile, where she holds a level topline. Has a lengthy head..Long neck. Just a bit untidy in front action.

3RD     BROOKLAID LADY IGRAINE AT KIMBLEHOLME (MRS S P FEETHAM)

 Junior B (5)

1ST     LORDSCAIRNIE RHYTHM OF LOVE (MRS S F MARSTON-TEAL)

Super proportions on this b. She has a lovely head. Lengthy neck. Fairly well laid shoulders, upper arm could be better and would prefer more forechest. Well sprung ribs that go well back. Super topline, held on the move. Well made rear, but could be firmer going away. Correct coat.

 2ND     SAMLANE ALEXIS (MR P J & MRS N F PRICE)

Liked the proportions on this fem b. Could have a longer head. Lengthy, strong neck. Balanced in angulation. Well sprung ribs, could have a better underline. Is a v sound b.

 3RD     COMPANIA PANDORA (MR M & MRS S CROW)

 Post Grad B (8,1)

On the stack this looked a v strong class, sadly when they went round some outlines altered.

1ST     BENZDEN LACOSTE PINK ( MESSERS M A & R FLOWERS & SMITH)

V nice for type and proportions. Liked her fem head v much. Long neck, well laid shoulder. Correct chest. Well ribbed back. Slightly too rounded over croup and could be stronger in rear. Super feet. Lovely jacket.

2ND     BIMINI FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (MRS S JONES)

Presents a super outline stood. Has a fem head that is long enough. Dark eyes. Long neck. Could have a bit more forechest. Like her rear. Rather cuts up a bit in underline, spoiling the picture on move.

3RD     JILJAC PATSY CLIME (L GOULDING)

 Limit B (7)

V difficult class, rather a variety of virtues and faults to balance.

1ST     TRIXHUND TATI ROMANOVA (MR D M LEWIS

This good coated red b is v good to go over, I would just like more muscle in her rear. She has a v good head, dark eyes. Rather short  and a bit thick in neck. But has a good shoulder and decent length of upper arm. V good forechest, correct depth body. Well ribbed back. Well bent stifle and low hocks. Had a decent stride.

2ND     FOXEARTH FATMA SALKAN (MR T & MRS B HAYWARD)

Another good coated red. Long and fem in head, but could have a bit more width to her head. Long neck. Quite a good front, but not the length stride of 1 and lost her topline. Well ribbed. Good turn of stifle and low hocks. V good out and back.

3RD     BIMINI STARLIGHT EXPRESS (MRS S JONES)

 Open B (6,1)

 1ST     VERRAMI DOMESTIC GODDESS (MRS R E A BARNEY)

This b has ideal proportions, with correct leg length to give sufficient ground clearance, without looking leggy. Fem head, although would prefer it to be slightly longer. Super neck. Best front in class, she has well laid shoulders with correct length of upper arm. Well ribbed back. Well bent stifle with low hock. Parallel out and back mover, which is where she scored heavily over the opposition, and she has a long stride. Would have prefered her to be in fuller coat. CC & BOB.

2ND     BARRATINI HOT GOSSIP JW (MRS C H DAYKIN)

This b has a v good outline, which she holds on the move. Fem head. Ears are a bit too high set and she carries them stuck out, a pretty minor fault but one that detracts from her appeal. Long neck. Not quite front of 1. She has well sprung ribs that go well back. Quite a well bent stifle, low hocks. Another that isn't in her fullest jacket. Liked her on the move. RCC
